Costs and Money in Cyprus

Credit Cards

The currency of Cyprus has an interesting history. Today, the official currency of Cyprus is the Euro, which is very convenient for the traveler. Cyprus used to use the Cyprus Pound for its monies, beginning in 1879. It was at that time equivalent in value to the Pound Sterling of Britain, until 1960 when Cyprus gained its independence. It first was divided into 20 Shillings in 1960, or 9 Piastres of Turkish Kurus, and decimalized with 1000 mils to the pound. In 1983 it was converted into 100 cents to the pound. If none of this makes any sense, don’t worry. The moral of the story is they accepted the Euro in 2008. Here’s to simplicity!
